Sentarum Lake National Park is representative of wetland lakes, freshwater swamp forest and tropical rain forest in Borneo.

Lake Sentarum as a seasonal lake that is located in a national park is located on one side of the Kapuas river basin, which is about 700 km from the estuary to the South China Sea.Constrained by hills and plateaus that surround Lake Sentarum an catchment area as well as a regulator of the water system for Kapuas Watershed. Thus, the areas located downstream of Kapuas River is highly dependent on fluctuations in the amount of water being stored in the lake.

Sentarum Lake National Park has the distinctive and original plant is tembesu / tengkawang ( Shorea beccariana ). There is also a lowland forest plants like jelutung ( Dyera costulata), ramin ( Gonystylus bancanus ), meranti ( Shorea sp. ), Keruing ( Dipterocarpus sp. ), And ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri ).

The water system of freshwater lakes and inundated forest makes Lake Sentarum unlike other lakes. The water is black colored reddish because it contains tannins derived from peat forests in the vicinity. During the rainy season, the water depth of the lake may reach 6-8 meters and cause tergenangnya surrounding woods. However, during the dry season when the water level in the Kapuas river gradually drops, water from Lake Sentarum will flow to the Kapuas River so that water flow in the river is relatively stable.Finally, at the peak of the dry season, the state of Sentarum Lake and the surrounding area would be a vast expanse of land. Fish that had been on the lake, will be seen in small ponds.


The lives of people living around the Park include the Dayak Iban, Sebaruk, Sontas, Kenyah and Punan still traditional. Longhouse (Longhouse) were inhabited by the diverse magnitude, there are inhabited by five to eight heads of families and there are occupied 15 to 30 households. Longhouses inhabited 15-30 head of the family, have an average length of 186 meters and a width of 6 meters.
